Samsung unveiled its own Generative AI model called Samsung Gauss at the Samsung AI Forum 2023 event held at the company's R&D campus (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology) in Seoul, South Korea. The South Korean firm's Generative AI Model is named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who established the Normal Distribution Theory (Gaussian), which is considered the backbone of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) technologies.

Samsung Gauss is the company's self-developed Generative AI model

Samsung Gauss is the company's ultimate vision for Generative AI, and it was developed by Samsung Research. Right now, Samsung Gauss is being used internally by the company's employees, but it will be available to the general public soon through its future products. Samsung Gauss includes Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. Products based on these Generative AI models could be launched in the coming months, and it is expected that features based on these Generative AI models could be available on the Galaxy S24 series, which is expected to be launched in January 2024.

Samsung Gauss Language is a model that understands human language and generates answers. It can enhance productivity by helping with tasks such as composing emails, editing and summarizing documents, translating languages, and writing. When applied to products, it can also be used to offer smarter device controls. It can work on both cloud servers and endpoint devices (phones, tablets, and PCs).

Samsung Gauss Code is a model that specializes in code languages. It features a code assistant called ‘code.i' that will be used internally by Samsung. It is used for quick and easy software development through an interactive interface. It supports code description and test case generation.

Samsung Gauss Image makes it easy to create and edit images. It can change the style of an image, convert low-resolution images to high-resolution images, and add things to an existing image. Like Dall-E, it can also create entirely new images just through a small text description.

Samsung Gauss can run on-device to ensure private data is safe and could debut on Galaxy S24

All these Generative AI models developed by Samsung can run in on-device mode to protect private information. The company has constituted an AI Red Team that is based on the principles of AI ethics. It internally checks privacy and security issues during various stages of AI, ranging from data collection to result formation.

The Galaxy experience can be messy for first-time users

Some say it's always better to have more options, but it's never as clear-cut as it sounds. This design philosophy doesn't always work, and more importantly, it isn't a magical shortcut that can patch everything up and always lead to a better user experience. On the contrary, if not handled properly, I believe the “more […]

Buying a low or mid-range Galaxy phone is getting confusing again

A few years ago, Samsung went on a crusade to abolish the confusopoly it inadvertently created by offering too many choices in the low and mid-range Galaxy phone market segments. The company disposed of the Galaxy J series and simplified things. It focused solely on a few Galaxy A models, and in markets such as […]
