VP, Search

Today, I’m taking on a new role leading Search, and I am humbled by the opportunity to shape the future of this important product. I joined Google in 2003 as one of the first engineers building Google Local, which laid the foundation for the local information you find in Google Search and Maps today. In my early days, I focused on solving the technical challenges of surfacing high quality, accurate local information in our products. We may take this for granted now, but back then, it wasn’t so easy to find a great local pastry shop near you in an unfamiliar city. People trust Google Search to give them accurate answers, and to provide the best links to explore on the web. And it’s an exciting time for Search. We're seeing positive Search query growth in all of our major markets. People’s information needs continue to grow, so we’ll keep evolving and improving Search - earlier this month we updated our spam policies and ranking systems to improve quality significantly. We’re helping people search in entirely new ways -- whether that’s searching what they see with Lens or what they scribble with Circle to Search. And we’re piloting AI-powered overviews with Search Generative Experience (SGE). In fact, people have already issued billions of queries with SGE since we introduced it as a feature in Search Labs last year. We’ve had incredibly positive feedback on the combination of quick answers and the ability to dive deeper on the web. With SGE, we are able to serve a wider range of information needs and answer new types of questions, including more complex questions, like comparisons or longer queries. More coming soon! I'm incredibly grateful to work with an amazing team at Google that is working tirelessly to improve and evolve Search. As I step into this new role, I can’t wait to continue our mission, helping people everywhere find answers to even their most challenging questions!

Google Search suffers from the same incentive misalignment we see in healthcare. The users aren't the customers/payers. Your day-to-day users (us) aren't paying for your service, and your revenues come from advertisers who want our data and engagement. Thus, there will always be the perverse incentive to cater to advertisers' needs rather than that of the public. This is the fundamental issue that continues to plague Google Search, and just slapping AI tools on it won't fix it.

I certainly hope you can initiate change in the recent Search algorithms, especially for those of us who operate small independent media sites that have been negatively impacted. Watching ten years of hard work be dismantled isn't fun. I'm sure I'm not the only minority owned site that's been impacted, either.

What's your answer to someone like The Browser Company who have been boldly talking about how advertising has been holding back the search experience at Google and launched Arc Search that gives the option to generate a curated webpage for every search query. It is a hit and a miss but most of the times I get the answer and multiple viewpoints from different sources. This has been a thinking moment for even myself for the future of Search at HubSpot. Finding answers in the complex interleaves of a CRM can really be what makes or breaks a deal and even though AI has huge potential to formulate those answers, making each answer ready with the exact context someone needs at that time is the biggest challenge.

Now that a woman is in charge I hope to see fewer "angry white male" results from Reddit. Or at least also inclusion of Pinterest on the same level. We have seen a lot of bad press about Reddit over the years so I was surprised the site would be favored in such a manner.

Great, do me a favor, fix it. It is not as good as it used to be. Too often I get ranked BS and not what I want. AND....to be honest, I am starting to find the amount of data that Google tracks across its platforms to be super creepy. I've reached a point where I am willing to pay for search, for AI, for email, to avoid all the personal data tracking. Cuz, to be honest with you, my sense is that the most successful Google product ever is Google Ads. Successful for Google, not the rest of us. To be honest, I was a big fan of Google years ago. Now? I switched to Firefox for my browser, Duck Duck Go for search, I am dumping my Android for an iPhone unless they incorporate that abomination of an AI, Gemini then I have no idea what I am gonna do. I'm sick and tired of the PC / Woke censorship on Youtube so I switched to going to Rumble first. I only have Gmail cuz I had to have an account for my Android, but I am dumping that as soon as I switch. As a member of my town council, I am encouraging our schools to look at alternatives to Chrome Books and alternatives to Google Docs. I do not think we need Google sucking our kids into their ecosystem before they even hit puberty.

Hi Elizabeth, Please revert the policies that killed the Internet's forums (other than Reddit). Google Search will make less money if you do that, but it will be vastly more useful to everyone. I know that choice is impossible for you since your company pays no dividends to shareholders so share value depends solely on growth. Your company is stuck in growth ratchet. If you want to have positive impact, you must convince your bosses to let you prioritize quality over growth. Also, please add an option to make Google Search stop rewriting my search terms. I need exact string matches so I can find obscure software engineering knowledge.

Congratulations Liz! You have always been a leader who deeply cares about both the product and the people and I'm excited to see where you are taking Search!

SGE is currently terrible for everyone… Terrible for publishers who aren’t being fairly compensated if at all for their content. Terrible for consumers who have to put up with an experience that in the modern age takes forever to load and is inconsistent with the truth.. Terrible for Google due to the additional costs involved and being forced to market a sub par product in order to keep up with competitors.. I wish you all the best in the new role and hope you can sort out the above.
