As the #NHS moves rapidly to digital solutions, centred around the #NHSAPP as the single digital front door, it's important to understand the differences between solution types. Jussi Määttä thank you for a nice, simple explanation. Whilst #emeetandgreet, #patientengagementportals and #electronicpatientrecords (EPRs) are all high profile and being centrally funded, #carepathwaysolutions are fundamentally important to streamline patient care and improve #productivity whether around #perioperativecare or #longtermconditions management and #virtualwards. Even before we start talking about #AI..... So it's important to develop our digital solutions vocabulary. All this becomes even more important as we move towards a new 10 year plan for the NHS... Buddy Healthcare will be a key enabler for the #NHS to achieve #productivity and #transformation of #patientoutcomes and #patientexperience

Yesterday’s Olof Rudbecksdagen program on AI in healthcare at Akademiska Hospital in collaboration with Uppsala University was engaging, with both preclinical and clinical research presented by researchers who were effective communicators, making AI concepts easy to understand. Some takeaways were: 1. AI is being applied in numerous research projects at Uppsala University, ranging from neurosurgery to cardiology, not only for diagnosis but also for disease prediction and rehabilitation. 2. Significant work is being done to move away from a "one-size-fits-all" treatments to more precise treatments, using AI tools to customize patient treatments. 3. While there is currently a strong focus on AI models, more attention should also be given to the interaction design between AI and humans to ensure effective collaboration. 4. Rudbeck was a professor who worked across many fields like anatomy, botany, and linguistics. In the same way, AI connects technology, medicine, and data science, showing how important working across disciplines is to create new innovations.

How long do you think it takes to see an ophthalmologists in my home country of Denmark? Usually considered one of the strongest public healthcare systems in the world, the average wait to see an ophthalmologist in Denmark has hit 9 months 🤯 This is an increase of over 50 % in just 5 years. And we have only seen the tip of the iceberg, as the growing patient burden continues to outpace the number of medical professionals. I don't think any of us agree that we should accept a rise in preventable vision loss and blindness. But that's the path we are on, here in Denmark and globally ⚠ The challenge is massive, but so is the opportunity for innovators. It's time for industry to step up and deliver solutions that truly empower doctors 💪 #Medtech #Ophthalmology #eyecare #Denmark #Lasers #InnovationInHealthcare #HealthTech

Empowering Swedish Healthcare for a Brighter Tomorrow Sweden’s healthcare system is on the cusp of a transformative era. The Swedish Association of Health Professionals Vårdförbundet has shone a light on the need for change, revealing that 30% of healthcare workers are working part-time due to high work load. This statistic isn’t just a number—it’s a call to action to create a work environment that supports our dedicated professionals. Despite the challenges, there’s a silver lining. The resilience shown by healthcare workers under 35 is nothing short of inspiring. Their commitment to patient care, even when considering their future, underscores the passion that drives our healthcare system. Strikes and collective actions are a testament to the strength and unity of our healthcare community. They highlight the dedication of our workers to advocate for a system that allows them to give their best to patients. In the wake of Covid-19, our healthcare leaders have been navigating uncharted waters, striving to balance budgets while maintaining quality care. Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, and their leadership has paved the way for a new chapter in healthcare management. As we move forward, we’re seeing a renewed focus on wellbeing and job satisfaction. Initiatives are underway to reduce overbooking and ensure that every healthcare worker can provide care without the fear of burnout. Together, we’re building a future where healthcare workers are celebrated, supported, and empowered to thrive. A future where every member of our healthcare family can look forward to a fulfilling career, filled with opportunities for growth and innovation. Let’s continue to champion a healthcare system that’s not only sustainable but also a source of national pride—a system where caring for those who care for us is our utmost priority.

Last Thursday I talked about leading AI development and implementation in healthcare for the Next Generation AI Business Leaders Programme at AI Sweden. A couple of things that I lifted from our learnings over five years: 🤝 Work cross-functional with product, design, tech incl ai, clinical and regulatory competences. 🛠 Validate the biggest risks early and include value, feasibility, viability and usability risks – many you can validate without building ⌛ Think early on adoption and certification but timebox the effort before you know you have a valuable service 🔄 Work in iterations and integrate learning to adjust the aim A final note is that with the current challenges within healthcare focus on problems and solutions that: 1️⃣ Free up time in healthcare 2️⃣ Improve patients lives 3️⃣ Improve medical outcomes (in that order👌)

I’m honored to have been nominated for the prestigious Nordic Women in Tech Awards 2024! What does this nomination mean to me as a healthcare innovation leader and advocate for equity and access? I have been creating innovative healthcare solutions and co-founding startups in healthcare since 2006. In 2020, I expanded my focus to the tech sector, pursuing my Stanford University School of Medicine Masters of Science degree in data and innovation to guide organizations through digital transformation, utilizing AI and more. Graduating from Stanford in 2022, I became CEO of Pacific Vision Foundation, leading a major turnaround of this international hub, the Pacific Vision Eye Institute, a center of excellence in ophthalmology. Together with our partners, we provide key access to care in the heart of San Francisco through multiple service lines like the Pacific Vision Surgery Center, the Low Vision Clinic, LIONS EYE FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA NEVADA INC Sutter Health CPMC Ophthalmology Residency. In addition to the tech and data-forward improvements and research at PVF, I'm an advisor for DAYA and Mindforce Game Lab, and President of HIMSS Northern California Chapter. I love supporting women in tech and innovations, moderating panels/speaking at Life Science Bridge, Becker's Healthcare, Vitalis, Gothenburg Tech Week, Stanford University, MS in Clinical Informatics Management (MCiM), HIMSS or deb. Inadequate representation of women in the tech industry remains an urgent issue. Startling statistics reveal that in 2021, a staggering 84% of startup funding in Europe went to all-male teams, while women-founded startups secured only 1.9% of VC funds in the US in 2022. Events like the Nordic Women In Tech Awards play a vital role in showcasing the exceptional talent and perspectives of women in the industry. By celebrating together, we reinforce the value of diverse perspectives and ideas - empowering women and encouraging men to contribute to inclusivity. The most exciting aspect of the Nordic Women In Tech Awards for me has always been the opportunity to connect and build relationships with my fellow nominees. Together, we can amplify our individual efforts, collaborate, and have greater impact. This event provides a platform for growth, shared success, and exploring unique perspectives and contributions. Some women in tech who inspire me are: Nasim Bergman Farrokhnia, Katarina G Bonde, Bozoma Saint John, Sara Vaezy, Dr. Geeta Nayyar, MD, MBA, Christina Farr Kate Rosenbluth Erica Larson Solome Tibebu Tiffany Boswell Karen Silverman Anima Anandkumar. Their accomplishments exemplify the immense potential of women in tech. I'm grateful for this nomination, I look forward to contributing to a more diverse and inclusive tech industry. Let's connect and explore exciting opportunities for collaboration. #NordicWomenInTechAwards #CollaborationOpportunities #Innovation #TechIndustry #SocialImpact #HealthAccess #HealthTech #Sustainability #Equity

In a new study, a methylation biomarker from Sola Diagnostics GmbH achieved very high sensitivity for cervical cancer and pre-cancer when combined with HPV16/18 genotyping. Methylation biomarkers are a promising method to triage HPV-positive women. HPV testing is a very effective way of preventing cervical cancer, but many more women are infected than those who actually develop a lesion that could become cancer. The unique advantage of the methylation test (compared to other possible triage tests for HPV testing) is that its evaluation is automated. However, and here is a big concern: in these studies, we assume that colposcopy, the next step in the treatment process, is miraculously 100% effective. Until today, colposcopists relied on the Pap smear results, which have grades, and it is known that colposcopy is less reliable if the patient has a negative Pap smear result (https://lnkd.in/dHJvgcj6). In an HPV screening plus HPV typing plus methylation biomarker scenario, the colposcopist will just receive a plain and simple positive screening result. Therefore, it is possible that the method (biomarker and HPV typing) finds theoretically almost all lesions, but the colposcopists will have a hard time establishing how to proceed, and real-life results may suffer. I believe biomarker results should use grades to overcome this problem. (Competing interest declaration: The company I work for, Neumann Diagnostics, developed a similar test, the Neumann Confidence Marker.)

Eva Hellström Lindberg wants to improve survival and quality of life for patients suffering from myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a group of blood cancers. Her research aims to add to our biological understanding of the diseases, thereby resulting in fewer relapses from treatment and potential new therapies. MDS patients often have mutations in the DNA of their blood-forming stem cells. A clinical study initiated by Hellström Lindberg during her first stint as a Wallenberg Clinical Scholar showed it is possible to produce person-specific markers that reveal whether the patient still has mutated DNA after the transplant. This is called “measurable residual disease” (MRD). “MRD markers can predict relapse on average eighty days before detection using the usual clinical methods. This opens a window for doctors to begin treatment earlier. We’re now testing to see whether this results in fewer relapses.” https://lnkd.in/gDJU7edp #Research #MDS #bloodcancer Karolinska Institutet Eva Hellstrom-Lindberg

🫀 Could insulin resistance be a key factor in developing aortic stenosis (AS)? This post from ArchCath dives into intriguing research linking insulin resistance—a condition typically associated with diabetes—to AS, the most common heart valve disease in Western countries. The study not only expands our understanding of AS but also challenges the traditional view of it as solely a degenerative condition. 💡 Why it’s important: These findings highlight the potential of targeting insulin resistance through lifestyle changes and early interventions to prevent AS progression. It’s a thought-provoking shift that emphasizes the need to consider broader metabolic factors in heart health. 🔗 Explore ArchCath’s post below to learn more about how this research is shaping the future of cardiovascular care. #AorticStenosis #InsulinResistance #HeartHealth #CardiovascularInnovation #ArchCath
