DeepCast shipped a number of really cool new features recently in advance of a broad outreach push to podcast listeners. One new feature is our new Daily DeepDigest tool that sends you a concise daily email including any new episodes from the trailing 24 hours from any podcasts you Subscribe to (on DeepCast). Think daily podcast cliff notes or podcast news ticker tape, with a hint of Morning Brew various brews or PitchBook News—it's increasing information throughput when you're pressed for time. And this feature is rapidly evolving to distill other key extractions from shows you're already interested in, but also exposing you to other shows you might be unfamiliar with that also have nuggets to share—and thus increasing your aperture yet still conscious of your time. Want to go deeper on any given episode? Click the episode detail and you're off to an episode on DeepCast, where you can subsequently read a longer form distillation of that episode or go straight to the source and listen to the episode. (And podcaster friends, these pages are definitely increasing indexing and thus Google entry points to your shows!) I'm loving this feature as a user, personally. We (Climate VC) need to stop making excuses for the growth trajectories of our companies There’s a reason why Matthew Stotts and I chose the venture capital asset class to focus on - it has to GROW fast. And there are a lot of fast-growing, money-making opportunity areas with huge problems that could benefit from highly motivated well-funded and skilled teams looking to build a large company. As we get prepared for our Angel Conference program, we run workshops to help get things lined up for the right conversations between investors and early pre-seed startups. We have a deadline coming up on August 27th for startups. One of the places that we see companies having a bit of trouble is on the customer discovery side of things. So we have a couple of workshops on that early customer discovery and associated efforts to get traction early before your MVP. As Angel Investors, we need to think with a portfolio mindset instead of investing in one or two companies to "see how it goes". We have a panel of SAC alumni talking about their perspectives on their portfolio of companies. We also know that startups don't practice pitching enough. So we we have workshops for improving pitches before people pitch for real. Earlier this year, we surveyed our fellow Los Angeles-based GPs to get a pulse check on the LA venture ecosystem. Here’s what we found: 💗 Deal flow is healthy, and most LA venture investors (68%) are seeing the same or more deal flow YoY. ✈ LA investors are spending time in a variety of markets, with NYC, Austin, and SF following closely on LA’s heels. 🔍 Innovation is concentrated in AI and machine learning, space, and commerce. 💸 Funding is happening, but it’s barbell-shaped, with deals concentrated at the early and late stages. Funding post-Series A has been challenging. 🚩 LA is differentiated, but not without its challenges. Key difficulties include not attracting enough AI talent (despite having the largest number of engineers graduating from our region over any other in the United States); talent relocated to more tax-friendly or less expensive locations; and the great SoCal / NoCal divide 🙏 Thank you to all our many respondents! Last night's Technology Association of Oregon panel discussion on raising capital for AI ventures was full of interesting takeaways. The event brought together leading PNW VCs, CEOs, and funders to share their perspectives and best practices. Here's what you need to know: ➡ The AI/ML space is rapidly evolving, presenting huge opportunities for startups tackling real business problems. VCs are actively seeking out the most ambitious and disruptive companies in this domain. ➡ Having an "unfair advantage" is key - whether that's proprietary data sets, unique domain expertise, or unparalleled access to customers. AI ventures need strong differentiation to stand out. ➡ Build relationships early with VCs, even before you're ready to raise. Their insights and connections can accelerate your journey. The PNW venture ecosystem is highly collaborative and accessible. ➡ Don't be deterred by the perceived lack of local funding. Great companies with compelling visions will get funded, period. Leverage the PNW's strengths in developer/engineering talent. ➡ Recognize and proactively address the potential downsides of AI - from data privacy to model bias. Building responsibly is both an obligation and an opportunity. ➡ Move fast, be bold. Raising capital is always hard, but fortune favors the brave in this space. With the right team, tech and traction, you can build a world-changing business here in the PNW. Where traditional #SAST scanners fall short, HoundDog.ai excels by detecting #PII data leaks directly at the code level. While SAST scanners are effective against predictable patterns, they struggle with the diverse naming conventions developers use for functions and methods handling sensitive data. HoundDog.ai overcomes these challenges using #AI and advanced techniques such as interprocedural and taint analyses. It’s a privilege to be part of this venture.

Interesting additional facts about Technology Start-ups - According to CBInsights: 29% of startups fail due to running out of funding and personal money. 42% of startup failure after misreading market demand 82% of businesses that went under did so because of cash flow problems. 10% of startups fail within the first year. I am a big fan of the fail fast philosophy when it comes to 'fast tech' Technologies Companies. What happens to all the deep tech and hard tech companies that are building substantial market moving technologies? I see Rex Capital LLC. very much aligning with their interests.

We are so excited to announce our investment in Raechel Lambert, Bernard Kobos, and Ryan Lambert and their company, River Platform Company. River is a platform that empowers brands and influencers to build large-scale, in-person communities. To date, the platform has hosted over 2,000 events with 3,000 crowdsourced hosts and 55,000 attendees across more than 15 cities worldwide. We like to think of it as the operating system for community management. If the Catholic Church were founded today, it would use River to coordinate its global activities. No kidding. I've seen countless startups stumble on regulatory strategy - it's painful, expensive, and often avoidable. The seminar shared by David Pudwill and Geetha Rao hosted by UCSF Innovation Ventures, absolutely nailed what matters most. Here are my key takeaways that every founder should know: 1. Understand your scope - this is where it all starts or stops You've got to nail this foundation: --Map out ALL potential clinical uses (yes, all of them) --Find your "regulatory siblings" (similar approved devices) --Get crystal clear on your impact level: 1)Wellness management (easiest route) 2)Screening/monitoring (middle ground) 3)Diagnostics/therapy (time to bring your A-game) 2. Pick your lane: regulatory pathways from "Easy" to "Buckle Up" Here's what you're looking at: --510(k) Exempt: The startup favorite (for good reason!) --510(k): Tried and true path --De Novo: The road less traveled (but sometimes necessary) --PMA: The regulatory marathon (pack your endurance) 3. Strategic roadmap: This part separates winners from the pack Smart execution is everything: --Start minimal, but make it smart --Grow strategically (think chess, not checkers) --Nail the execution sequence: Define → Design → Test → Produce → Sell Pro tips from the investor seat - know your audience and speak their language: --Investors need that solid IP story --Clinicians want real-world outcomes --Regulators love familiar territory (use it) --Claims strategy (this is crucial) Three rules to live by: --Start small (seriously, resist the temptation) --Expand methodically (no shortcuts) --Document everything (future you will thank you) Why this matters to investors - here's the bottom line: "Your regulatory strategy IS your market strategy.
