Congratulation to Tyme Group that has successfully raised US$250 million, the largest fintech raise this year in South-East Asia, valuing the business at US$1.5 billion. Having completed its latest investment round, Tyme Group has now also firmly achieved unicorn status after securing a total of US$250 million in funding for a total valuation of US$1.5 billion. Tyme’s oversubscribed series D capital raise was led by Nubank, which invested US$150 million, with M&G’s Catalyst subscribing for US$50 million. Existing shareholders are investing a further US$50 million. Tyme’s investors includes the Founders, African Rainbow Capital, The Ethos AI Fund, Apis Growth Fund II (‘Apis’), Tencent, The Gokongwei Group, British International Investment (BII), Norrsken 22, Blue Earth and Lavender Hill Capital Partners. The Nubank partnership solidifies Tyme's position within digital banking and sets the stage for the latter’s growth in Southeast Asia. This partnership brings significant expertise and resources to Tyme, positioning the company well to expand its market presence.

Our team has since expanded to include Torge, our Chief of Staff, and Fernanda, our visiting analyst, currently based in Luxembourg and Munich. Post-pandemic, we believed against the consensus that building a firm apart was possible—we just had to prove it. Remote work naturally sharpens our focus on priorities, which is crucial for any business but also comes with challenges. Here’s how we’ve approached remote work: 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: We utilise tools like Notion, Asana, Google Docs, Shared Google Calendars and Folk. We also streamline our financial operations by using our own portfolio company cleverlohn for payroll. 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We hold daily check-ins—morning for strategic decisions and afternoons for operational priorities. If needed, we schedule dedicated calls for deeper discussions on strategic topics. Regular in-person meetings in different cities keep us connected without the overhead of a permanent office. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀, 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁: Remote work demands trust as you cannot see what people are doing, which we build through clearly defined tasks, deadlines and roles. This clarity ensures that everyone is aligned. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀: Understanding what outcomes need to be achieved every quarter is key. Especially as we continue fundraising and deploying capital. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Our culture is built on radical candor and transparency, ensuring everyone is working towards the same goals. Open discussions and quick feedback loops allow us to address issues openly. This environment encourages accountability and continuous improvement. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: We meticulously discuss and document our processes via Loom recordings, google docs or notion so everyone understands how things are done. Regular iteration on these processes helps us stay disciplined and efficient. This is particularly important in a remote setup where discipline is key to consistency. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: We anticipate predictable workload:, such as attending events (booking travel/meetings) and LP updates, by planning and working ahead of time. This allows us to be proactive rather than reactive, a necessity in remote work where spontaneous problem-solving isn’t as easy. 🙋 Why I started Socap.ai (YC W23) as the top YC founder and what’s next Thanks all for the support during last week’s Socap.ai (YC W23) announcement! A lot of you were curious why I decided to start it after transitioning from CEO to a Board Member at Mighty Buildings (a top Y Combinator company) — here’s why 👇 I’m a rare founder who has been at the other side of the venture table (just to remind you, I started as a VC having founded a number of firms — Ruvento Ventures, EnchantVC, and HaxAsia to name a few — and have famously invested in 2 unicorns out of 17 seed investments while at Ruvento). Being a VC was fun and all, but I wanted a more interesting challenge. When we started Mighty, I couldn’t have imagined how complicated this road would be. As a deep tech company, we needed to raise A LOT of funding and needed to raise it fairly quickly. So far, Mighty has raised over $150M all the way from YC W16 to Series B in 2023. During this journey, I learned from the best of the best — at the YC Series A program and from the unicorn founders who have angel invested in us/advised us. Hundreds of people have helped me along the way with their generous feedback and, most importantly, intros/connections. I don’t think we would have been able to get there if not for my meticulous approach to parallel fundraising and activating/growing my social capital. I started Socap.ai (YC W23) because I grew tired of seeing founders completely misunderstanding what the successful fundraise looks like as well as lacking a quality way of growing their network. Oftentimes it’s a one-time opportunity and if you fuck up the process, that’s it. My mission with this is to change the mindset and make it 10x easier with the help of AI and the right kind of infrastructure (e.g. community). The tech startups scene and fundraising as the use-case is just the beginning for Socap.ai (YC W23) — I, my partner Alexander Nevedovsky, and our team (former VC associates and finance leaders) are so well-connected and well-versed in this beachhead market segment, that it would be stupid to start anywhere else, especially seeing founders pain every single day (I get around 50 connection requests daily from founders seeking help). I’m proud that along with the official Socap.ai announcement we have started hosting regular Socap.ai fundraising bootcamps as the initiative where founders can learn from me and a slew of other top founders (Abakar Saidov, Aaron Holm, Michael Ma, Salman Ahmad, Sly Spencer-Lee, Eric Sanchez to name just a few, there are dozens more whom I'll tag in the coming posts) — for free. Caliza raised an $8.5 million round of funding led by Initialized Capital. This is the first #LatAm-focused investment of the VC firm originally founded by Alexis Ohanian Sr., Harjeet Taggar and Garry Tan. Real-time #payments are becoming commonplace for individuals and businesses, but not yet for #crossborder transactions. That’s what Caliza is hoping to change, starting with Latin America. Founded in 2021 by American entrepreneur Ezra Kebrab, who now lives in São Paulo, #Brazil, Caliza offers an alternative to transfers made via #SWIFT, which are the norm in the Americas but can take days to settle. Instead, Caliza provides an API and front-end payment system that use #crypto #stablecoins - specifically, Circle’s reserve-backed #USDC - and existing real-time payment networks to allow for instant transfers and provide international merchants with U.S. digital dollar accounts.

Block, the parent company of Square and Cash App, aims to leverage its dual ownership to create synergy between its point-of-sale software and peer-to-peer payments app. Jack Dorsey, Block's founder, highlighted the advantage of having relationships with both merchants and consumers, stating it's a rare position in commerce and payments.
