From Humble Beginnings to Expert Solutions: My Journey as a Software Developer Becoming a skilled software developer is no small feat. I still vividly remember my early days, grappling with Zend and spending a whole week just to create my first form. Back then, the documentation was misleading, and my understanding of Object-Oriented Programming was minimal. Those initial struggles were both challenging and formative. It took me a decade of coding, learning, and growing before I could truly feel the shift in my capabilities. Now, with ten years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that no problem takes me more than an hour to solve. This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It was built on persistent effort, continuous learning, and the accumulation of experience. Each line of code I wrote, each error I debugged, and each project I completed played a part in sharpening my skills. To those just starting out or feeling overwhelmed: remember, every expert was once a beginner. We're all connected with hundreds to thousands of recruiters, CEO's, and directors but nothing? For all our years of experience and hard work building our portfolio's? Not those who finished school, not myself who's coming up on 10 years of being in the industry, and not even those with 20-30 years of experience? All we get are automatic, and sometimes immediate rejections without a call? Are we that worthless, even to the mega AAA companies we reapply for with experience from them? I know I've helped many people to learn and even get hired so where is my support in return? Full time work isn't the only type of work that exists. Why can't we even at least be offered contracts? How do we expect to survive in this industry when we even get rejected, usually without reason, after hitting every bullet point in an interview and being among the most experienced? I have 9-10 years of professional experience. I worked hard and studied games and animation since I was 15. I used connections and rapidly growing skills to get opportunities. But I also had a messy resume and not nearly the amount of experience I have today yet it's more impossible to find something now? It's not just the economy - it's people too. I have mentored countless people including sr members to become comfortable in their opposite skillsets during intense projects. Myself and others are more than qualified so what's the problem? Are we too young? Too old? As for juniors: 2-3+ years of experience and shipped games required for entry level roles? Both are ongoing commitments that incur various forms of debt and require constant maintenance. - Continuous Repairs: Just as a house needs constant repairs, software always needs bugs fixed. - Regular Updates: Software requires regular updates to its code and servers, much like a house needs renovations. - Adaptation to Needs: Users continuously demand new features in software, just as a family’s needs evolve, requiring the house to adapt. Both software and houses need investment to prevent accumulating debt. In software, this means managing technical debt before it cripples the system. Reflecting on my previous role, one thing I’ve come to appreciate about myself is the ability to operate independently and drive meaningful results. In fact, I often found myself in situations where I could manage an entire team’s objectives solo—not because the team wasn’t valuable, but because I thrive on taking ownership of complex, high-stakes projects. For example, in my work deploying scalable ML/AI solutions for the FDA, I built and optimized systems end-to-end: from fine-tuning LLMs to integrating pipelines and deploying them in production. This experience taught me not just technical expertise, but also the importance of efficiency, adaptability, and delivering measurable impact under tight constraints. Now, as I search for my next opportunity, I’m eager to find a team where I can contribute this same level of ownership and drive. Whether that’s leading projects, building scalable systems, or applying machine learning to solve critical challenges, I’m ready to make an impact.
