AI in education promises to revolutionize the teaching and learning experience by automating administrative tasks, providing real-time feedback, and personalizing learning pathways. However, the integration of AI should not overshadow the essence of human interaction in education. Recent insights from Fortes Education detailed interactions with its parent community reveal a strong preference among parents for less tech time (although students would argue otherwise 😊), increased sports activities, and more direct teacher-student interactions, suggesting that the community values traditional educational experiences over an increased reliance on AI-based learning. The future of education with AI entails a delicate balance, emphasizing the role of educators as facilitators and mentors rather than mere conveyors of information. While AI can enhance educational outcomes by supporting personalized learning and alleviating teachers' administrative burdens, the core of education should remain focused on fostering critical thinking, creativity, and personal growth. Incorporating AI into the educational process requires careful consideration of these values, ensuring technology serves to augment the learning experience without compromising the vital human connection between teachers and students. The findings are captured here: https://lnkd.in/ek-eVQGp Data-driven technologies and AI within EdTech are entering the school and classroom environment at pace, and are likely to increase. The UK government has recently made a series of announcements, including the promise of an AI assistant for every teacher. But concerns abound on the objectives and impact of this push, from displacing the need for new bricks and mortar and working conditions for school staff with tech-fixes, or the poorly understood effect of the learning experiences of children. Andrew Buher says we shouldn't bringing genAI into K-12 until there's evidence. Funny that I'm working on an article with exactly the opposite view. To be fair, he seems to be mostly talking about student-facing AI, and "evidence" seems to be about AI performance and safety rather than on learning utility. Mostly...but then there was this recommendation - "Schools should continue to focus on timeless skills." See, 'cause those timeless skills aren't just numeracy and literacy, they practically define durable skills. And K-12 doesn't teach durable skills. To the extent they do, they're approaching it based on very little evidence of what is best. We know how to teach things we know how to test. Notions like far transfer - critical to durable skills - are poorly understood. Evidence should be used when it's relevant, but demanding it when it doesn't exist or there is too much delay to get it (the tech has moved on) just puts brakes on progress. It doesn't mean there has to be the wild west, which is the reason evidence got national emphasis. That was about teachers ignoring evidence. This is different; the evidence is missing. The community only learns what's best by trying a lot of different approaches, not standing pat. #k12 #education #schoolleadership #aieducation #durableskills
