Can you use PSVR2 on your PC?

PSVR2 New Features

Is it possible to use the PSVR2 on your PC? We understand that this question is at the forefront of the minds of many PSVR2 owners, but the answer is less than straightforward.

The original PlayStation VR was not the most advanced tethered VR system, but it was generally regarded as having a significant advantage in terms of comfort and ease of use. The PlayStation VR2 is a huge upgrade over the original, offering improvements on every feature, but keeping the same level of comfort and usability.

It is not surprising that some PSVR2 owners might want to get more out of the device by hooking it up to a powerful gaming PC to take advantage of the balance, comfort, and eye-tracking features of the PSVR2 in other games.

Sadly, while the concept of using something like Valve’s SteamVR integration to play VR titles on the PSVR2 seems great, there is currently no simple way of connecting a PSVR2 to a PC and achieving playability.

As is common with console manufacturers, Sony has locked down the PSVR2 to make it exclusive to the PlayStation 5. Despite this, many users and modders are keen to take advantage of the impressive specs of the PSVR2 to play some PC-based VR titles, but at the moment the simple avenues are blocked.

How to connect a PlayStation VR2 to PC

To physically connect a PSVR2 to your PC, all you need to do is to plug it into a fully-featured USB-C port on your desktop PC. However, for those looking to actually get it to work on a PC, you might have your work cut out for you.

Sadly, although Windows can recognize that there’s something attached to the USB-C port, getting it to output a signal is a different thing entirely. With our RTX 3080-equipped gaming PC, we could do nothing but see it pop up as a device in Windows. However, The Verge reports that plugging it into an AMD GPU’s USB-C port will manage to get the headset to output a 1080p signal to the headset as a second screen.

The PSVR 2 Sense controllers, once hooked up via USB appear as HID-compliant game controllers, but you are unable to use them for anything quite yet.

Additionally, we saw no change when trying to use the headset with any SteamVR titles.

Sony is testing PSVR2 compatibility with PC

As it stands, PSVR2 will not work on your PC, even though the devices are recognized. However, in a recent blog post, Sony has shared that official PC support is currently being tested.

It was thought that Sony likely wanted to keep PSVR2 support on the PlayStation platform as they could still stand to earn on software sales. Yet according to the new blog post, Sony is planning to bring PC support as close as sometime during 2024.
