The Glenlivet Distillery in Speyside is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2024. Promising a year of “celebrations with bold and original innovations and initiatives”, Glenlivet is kicking things off with the release of a limited edition 12 Year Old.
The Glenlivet 200 Year Anniversary Limited Edition 12 Year Old is available now via The Whisky Exchange for just £51.95.
This celebratory whisky was matured in first-fill American oak casks, with tasting notes featuring “ripe pear, coconut shavings, and creamy vanilla” accompanied by “fresh tangerines, pineapple slices, and indulgent crème caramel” on the nose.
Prior to the creation of this special release, The Glenlivet launched a campaign whereby they invited up-and-coming artists to present their packaging designs, based on the principle of “forever moving forwards”. Studio Berdi in Colombia stood out from the rest, and their winning packaging design features Glenlivet’s founder, George Smith. Smith is surrounded by blooming flowers and the equipment that has made The Glenlivet a forward-thinking distillery led by innovation.
The Glenlivet has always prided itself on its initiative and has brought new and exciting ideas to the whisky world. One such innovation was the maturation of scotch whisky in Cognac casks, a first for the industry at the time. Perhaps the most interesting project from Glenlivet, in the name of environmental conservation, is the Glenlivet Capsule Collection. The Capsule Collection comprised three single malt whiskies encased in biodegradable capsules made from seaweed, allowing drinkers to pop the scotch into their mouths and enjoy the “glassless cocktails” on offer.

We can’t help but wonder what else Glenlivet has in store for whisky fans this year. Does the release of a low-age statement and very affordable whisky signal that something far older is yet to come? We will have to wait and see.
