Sanuk and Grateful Dead Reunite on Fuzzy Footwear

Sanuk, known for its slingback sandals and slip-ons, announced a limited-edition drop with the Grateful Dead. Powered by Warner Music Artist Services, the collection represents the fifth iteration in an ongoing partnership between the brand and the band.

The collection updates Sanuk’s Cozy Vibes collection, characterized by simple silhouettes made to be worn at home or outdoors with a nod to pop culture. With references to the Grateful Dead’s ‘60s and ‘70s heyday, the line of indoor-outdoor slippers and slides features colorful psychedelic fuzzy linings, debossed skull and lightning bolt logos, and embroidered song titles.

According to Sanuk, the Cozy Vibe Low slip-on and the Cozy Vibe slipper are lined with a fluffy, soft wool and Tencel blend. Crafted with responsible sourcing and sustainability in mind, the collection features 100-percent traceable leather and recycled polyester fabrications, as well as a sock liner made with 85 percent bio-based content and outsoles made from 55 percent sugarcane foam.

Available in men’s and women’s sizes, the Sanuk x Grateful Dead collection retails for $85-$95 on sanuk.com.

“We are grateful to continue our collaboration and bring the Dead’s classic, eclectic style and eco-minded ethos to this cozy new collection,” Seth Pulford, director of marketing at the Deckers-owned brand, said in a statement. “Whether it’s an early morning surf check, post snowboard lodge-life or just chilling out in the great indoors with good friends and tunes, this capsule provides ridiculous comfort for your winter happy places.”

The focus on eco-friendly materials is in keeping with Sanuk’s sustainability goals as Deckers recently set science-based targets, focusing on advancing the use of traceable, ecologically friendly materials and curbing waste. In 2021, Sanuk reported that more than 35 percent of the materials used in its products were designated as “preferred,” or made from recycled, renewable, regenerated, and natural inputs. By 2027, the company aims for 55 percent of its footwear fabrications, leathers and components to achieve preferred status.

The company said it has reduced water usage by more than 13 percent per pair of shoes produced when compared to a baseline year of 2019, and is on track to reach its goal of reducing water waste by 30 percent per pair by 2030. With a goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and overall energy usage by 40 percent per pair during the same time frame, Sanuk announced that it has so far slashed GHGs by more than 15 percent, while reducing energy usage by 12 percent.

Sanuk is also not the only American brand to have recently collaborated with the Grateful Dead. In July, the rockers’ clothing capsule with Levi’s included t-shirts, fleeces and accessories emblazoned with the musical legend’s iconography.
