Sunday was the 20th annual Doggie Carnival in downtown Savannah's Forsyth Park.

The park was filled with dogs of every breed enjoying food trucks, gourmet dog treats, and activities such as a doggy derby.

Adoptions Manager Nina Schulze of the Humane Society of Greater Savannah said they host the event to provide pet owners with resources in a fun environment.

"We just want to make sure that every pet in the community is cared for in the right way," Schulze said. "We want to make sure that they are spayed and neutered. We want to make sure they get the proper medical care. If they need help with food things like that, all of our rescues here in the community can come together and help provide that."

Schulze added that this year is the Doggie Carnival's greatest turnout yet, and she believes that is due to how unique it is to the Hostess City.

The event was also an opportunity to adopt a pet with several rescue shelters looking to give dogs a new home.

"So we do have some of our animals out here as well as other rescues they did bring out adoptable animals so if you just stop at their tables and talk to them if you are interested they will be more than happy to help you," Schulze said.

The carnival featured vendors selling pet-related products such as handmade toys and all-natural treats. Dawn Kirchinger, the owner of Munchies by Moe Joe, said she felt inspired to start her own business selling doggy waffles or "Woofles" after noticing a lack of healthy snack options for dogs.

"My dog has a lot of allergies, and we kind of stepped back and realized there are so many treats out there with artificial flavors and colors. So we put together a product, and now we sell it to everybody," Kirchinger said.

Kirchinger said she is glad to attend events like the Doggie Carnival because it reminds the community how crucial it is to care for their pets.
