ElmonX The Scream, 1895 (litho) Munch, Edvard (1863–1944)

Edvard Munch is universally renowned for his series of creations entitled “The Scream” This particular rendition of “The Scream” is a lithograph, crafted using a printmaking technique wherein the artist draws or paints directly onto a stone or metal plate. This plate is then utilized to produce multiple copies of the image.

In this haunting portrayal, we witness a surreal scene with a figure positioned on a bridge against a backdrop of turbulent, swirling skies. The central figure appears to be engulfed in profound anguish and existential despair, their visage distorted into a skull-like form, their hands clenched at their temples. The landscape surrounding the figure is warped and surreal, amplifying the emotional intensity of the scene.

“The Scream” is often interpreted as a powerful representation of anxiety, alienation, and the human condition. Edvard Munch created various versions of this composition, including paintings and prints, each featuring slight variations but consistently conveying inner turmoil and psychological distress.

Bold swirling lines and a distorted perspective, define the expressionist style of this artwork licensed by Bridgeman Images “The Scream” in its lithograph form is housed within the esteemed collection of The Art Institute of Chicago, a prominent art museum located in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

This powerful artwork bears inscriptions that further enhance its historical and contextual significance. The signature “E Munch” in graphite, as well as inscriptions like “Geschrei” and “Ich fuhlte das grosse Geschrei durch die Natur,” provide additional layers of meaning to this masterpiece, reflecting the artist’s intentions and emotions captured within the work.
