Rockstar Games has confirmed that, at least at launch, the company’s long-awaited open-world crime sim, Grand Theft Auto VI, will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 only, with no mention of a PC version.

In a press release published on December 4, shortly after the company was forced to release the GTA 6 trailer early after it leaked, the studio confirmed that GTA 6 won’t be available on PS4 or Xbox One consoles, something that most people assumed even before the trailer’s release. But after the trailer was put online, it became clear this game wasn’t going to run on those older machines.

But weirdly and frustratingly for PC gaming fans, Rockstar’s press release on Monday also confirmed it was continuing an old trend whereby new GTA games are only available on consoles at first, only showing up on PC later.

Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” Sam Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, explained in a press release. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

2008's Grand Theft Auto IV and its massive sequel, 2013's GTA V, both launched on PS3 and Xbox 360, but skipped PC at first. GTA IV eventually landed on PC in December 2008. Not much of a wait. However, GTA V didn’t come to PC until April 2015, nearly two full years later. And this trend of skipping PC happened again with 2018's Red Dead Redemption II, though PC players only had to wait a year—until November 2019—to play the open-world western.

Hopefully, when GTA 6, set in the Miami-like Vice City, launches in 2025, the wait for a PC port won’t be too lengthy. It’s also possible that between now and 2025, Rockstar will actually announce the PC port...though history says that’s unlikely.
