Sandbox

“The Sandbox” is a 3D user-generated gaming platform where players can create, hold, and monetize their gaming adventures in the Ethereum blockchain. In the game, users can swap cryptocurrency to access virtual plots of land and buy/sell in-game items like non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Sandbox was originally developed by the game studio Pixowl and released on May 15, 2012. It was released for PC on Steam in 2015.

Acquisition by Animoca Brands

Later, Animoca Brands acquired Pixowl in 2018. Soon after this acquisition, the Sandbox developers started shifting focus towards a 3D blockchain-based version of the game with voxel-style 3D graphics and the ability for users to create and trade in-game creations as NFTs.

The Sandbox, which literally takes place in a sandbox, is a distinctive game based entirely on the laws of physics and giving access to more than 230 different elements. In the game, the participants play the role of “Deity apprentice” and create their own universe via the exploration of resources like water, soil, lightning, lava, sand, glass, and other complex elements: humans, zombies, wildlife, robots, dinosaurs, trees, gems, explosives, vehicles, etc.

In the game the participants encounter a variety of missions, from simple tasks like using water and sand to make mud to challenging tasks like making a battery or building an electrical circuit.
Here the players have the power to create or destroy, and their imaginations are their limits. The game allows players to play like a benevolent deity and give life to majestic mountains and beautiful forests or embrace their vindictive side by generating seething fires and devastating explosions.

Buying land NFTs in the Sandbox metaverse

The virtual gaming platform offers virtual real estate, known as Land NFTs. A beta version of “The Sandbox Marketplace” was launched in April 2021, allowing users to buy in-game NFTs from 46 artists. Last year, The Sandbox announced partnerships with “The Walking Dead” and “Snoop Dogg”. Soon after the launch of “The Sandbox Alpha” in 2021, Hong Kong entrepreneur Adrian Cheng Chi-kong declared that he was considering investing in real estate in “The Sandbox” metaverse.

By March 2022, “The Sandbox” had approximately two million users.
The Sandbox blockchain gaming platform consists of three integrated products – Voxel Editor, Marketplace, and Gamemaker. The combined products benefit users by permitting them to secure copyright privilege for their user-created content via blockchain and smart contracts.
