Vitalik Buterin

Vitalik Buterin (28) is a Russian-born, Canadian programmer and writer popularly known for co-founding Ethereum.

There is hardly anyone who hasn’t heard the name of Vitalik Buterin in the crypto industry. He has been involved in the Bitcoin community since 2011 and has written several articles for Bitcoin magazine. However, Vitalik is most known for co-creating Ethereum.

Ethereum is the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, a decentralized platform that runs on blockchain technology. Ethereum is known for its native cryptocurrency, ether, or ETH.

Childhood of Vitalik Buterin:

Vitalik was born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna (Russia). Vitalik lived in Russia till he was six, later his parents immigrated to Canada in search of better employment opportunities.

When he was in the third standard of a Canadian primary school, he was placed in a program for the gifted. While in the program, Vitalik soon acknowledged that his unique skills and talents were peculiar to his peers and teachers. He was naturally inclined to math and programming, developed an early and strong interest in economics, and could add three-digit numbers in his head twice as fast as any other ordinary person of his age. He was considered a math genius.

Later, he spent four years at the Abelard School (Toronto). The school proved to be a big game changer as it drastically changed Vitalik’s perception of education. In Abelard, he discovered his trademark appetite for learning.

Apart from academics, from 2007-2010 Vitalik happily played World of Warcraft (WoW). However, after Blizzard removed the damage component from Vitalik’s favourite warlock’s Siphon Life skill, he developed a hatred for centralized services.

The launch of Ethereum:

Vitalik came across Bitcoin in 2011 and gradually started writing articles on Bitcoin in a magazine. He started looking into all the aspects of cryptocurrency and travelled the world to know about various crypto projects. Eventually, Vitalik concluded that the approach used for the projects was not broad enough but was focused on specific uses only.

After going through the protocols of those projects, Vitalik thought that it is possible to generalize what the protocols were doing by substituting all their functionality with a Turing-complete programming language. However, after the existing projects at that time refused to do so, Vitalik decided to do it himself — and this led to the birth of Ethereum.

In late 2013, Vitalik mentioned his idea in a white paper, which was shared with various people. Later, nearly 30 people reached out to Vitalik regarding a discussion on that concept. At first, the idea behind Ethereum was only about digital currency. With time, the vision changed, and by January 2014 end, the team decided to create decentralized file storage, and added a few more new concepts. The project was introduced publicly in January 2014.

In 2015, the Ethereum platform was launched by Buterin and Joe Lubin (founder of the blockchain software company ConsenSys).
