Highlights
- Cognition Labs has launched the world's first AI software Engineer
- The platform dubbed Devin can build websites from simple prompts
- The AI scene is changing dramatically with new use cases emerging
A unique Artificial Intelligence (AI) model has been launched by a newly established startup named Cognition AI. Meanwhile, this development has sparked curiosity and discussions in the technology sector.
Cognition AI Touts Devin’s Super Capabilities
The newly launched applied AI lab debuted the first AI software engineer dubbed Devin. Described as a “state-of-the-art” tool, Devin has been screened by several top AI companies and has even completed its practical engineering interviews hosted by these entities. For a test run, the artificial intelligence software engineer from Cognition AI has successfully done real-time jobs on the freelance platform Upwork.
According to Cognition AI, Devin can perform autonomous coding and also fine-tune its AI models. While it shares certain similarities with GitHub and Microsoft’s Copilot developer tool, Cognition AI took it a notch further with Devin.
For context, the novel AI software engineer can conveniently complete tasks on its own without interference or assistance from humans. Devin demystifies engineering projects autonomously by leveraging its shell, code editor, and web browser.
This capability was evaluated on the SWE-Bench benchmark. Devin was presented with some GitHub issues inherent in real-world open-source projects. The AI tool successfully resolved about 13.86% of the issue unaided. Compared to a previous model which registered a performance of 1.96% unassisted and 4.80% assisted, Cognition AI’s tool made a significant difference.
Today we're excited to introduce Devin, the first AI software engineer.
Devin is the new state-of-the-art on the SWE-Bench coding benchmark, has successfully passed practical engineering interviews from leading AI companies, and has even completed real jobs on Upwork.

Some other functionalities of the AI software engineer are its ability to learn how to use unfamiliar technologies, and contribute to mature production repositories. Devin is able to achieve these results by first receiving a request, then scouting through the internet in split seconds in search of educational resources that tackles the task at hand.
AI is Pushing The Frontline
This is obviously a new approach to prompt-to-action engineering and in the irony of things, the AI tool essentially replaces conventional software engineers. Notably, it is likely to promote the removal of some lower-level engineering jobs from the market.
Generally, the AI industry is advancing and more firms are consistently delving into the market, thereby heralding the introduction of more innovative AI technologies and tools. Global tech powerhouse Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation recently launched of an advanced AI lab in San Francisco.
Cognizant is looking to augment decision-making processes and drive superior business outcomes across various domains with its curated AI systems. Other AI tools are designed to equally tackle other inherently problematic and redundant issues
