Jeanne Bridgeton, an unmarried executive in her late forties, discovers life doesn’t begin and end on a spreadsheet when her expected menopause instead becomes an unexpected pregnancy. Though accomplished at managing risk professionally, Jeanne realizes her skills don’t extend to her personal life, where she has allowed the professional and the personal to become intertwined. She’s not even sure which of two men in her life is the father. Worse yet, a previously undisclosed family secret reveals that she may carry a rare hereditary gene for early-onset Alzheimer’s—and it’s too late to get genetic tests. This leaves Jeanne to cope with her intense fear of risk without the aid of the mountain of data she’s accustomed to relying upon. Wrestling with the question of whether her own needs, or those of her child, should prevail takes Jeanne on an intensely emotional journey—one that ultimately leads to growth and enlightenment.

Review

2020 14th Annual National Indie Excellence Award Finalist in Women’s Fiction
“Middle-aged corporate women have it rough in fiction. We’re bitter, uncompromising, lonely, regretful―and always barren. Which is why it was so refreshing to read
Land of Last Chances by Joan Cohen. By introducing a real-life woman facing real-world choices, Cohen subverts these familiar stereotypes and offers a brand new narrative. Finally! A thinking, feeling woman we can all root for.”
― Jillian Medoff, bestselling author of
This Could Hurt

“Joan Cohen’s remarkable first novel is impossible to put down.
Land of Last Chances is fiction, but the heroic actions of a business woman in her forties seem very real. While pregnant, she discovers a potential genetic predisposition to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The book takes you through the difficult decisions she has to make and educates you on our latest understanding of early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. A must-read genetic thriller intertwined with high-level business decisions at her workplace, all happening in the Boston area, the world center of advanced medicine and biotechnology.”
―Carmela R. Abraham, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Boston University School of Medicine

“Cohen offers an adeptly written genetic detective story in this novel. In Jeanne, she creates a sympathetic and multidimensional character. . . An artfully crafted portrayal of a woman who learns about herself as she weighs an unexpected choice.”
Kirkus Reviews

“In this deeply moving and astutely observed novel, one woman's harrowing confrontation with her family's genetic history offers a wise and bracingly modern contemplation of an ancient question: does our history determine our future? A vital new entry into the burgeoning literature of Alzheimer's fiction,
Land of Last Chances is a wise, hopeful, and enormously gripping debut.”
―Stefan Merrill Block, best-selling author of
The Story of Forgetting, The Storm at the Door, and Oliver Loving

“Cohen stuffs her novel with thought-provoking scenarios and dramatic events . . . this midlife melodrama will be appreciated by fans of issue-driven relationship fiction.”
Booklist

“Cohen’s satisfying, fast-paced debut . . . sustains its momentum and holds readers’ attention with capable prose and emotional depth.”
―BookLife

s an interesting story about a woman named Jeanne Bridgeton. She is in her late 40s and is married to her job. She thought she was going through menopause but it turns out she is pregnant. She also doesn't know who the father is. When it comes to work, she is always sure of what to do, but not when it comes to her personal life. She debates on having the baby after she discovers she may have the Alzheimer's gene. She doesn't want to bring a baby into the world when she may not remember who she is in a few years. While navigating this aspect of her life, she is also trying to navigate issues at work. The CEO of her company is dealing with PTSD after serving in Afghanistan. This book goes through the intense journey that will lead her to make life-altering decisions. There is so much happening in the story. It is almost hard to believe that all this can happen to one person. I really enjoyed the main storyline of Jeanne trying to figure out if she should risk having the baby. I felt that she is trying to think of what is best for the baby. For those who are pro-life, this may not be the book for you. Even though, I think there is something everyone can learn from reading about different experiences. I feel that the author really grasped Jeanne's anxiety and conflicting thoughts. I also appreciated that the author talks about issues like PTSD, and how it can affect someone and those they love around them. There is also a friend who struggles with diabetes. I have actually never read a story about someone who struggles with diabetes before and it is very eye-opening. It really captured the seriousness of the disease. However, the only character I liked is the dog. Yes, there is a dog in this story. Yes, you should have tissues. While I appreciated the issues surrounding the characters, they were all selfish. They only thought of themselves. There wasn't one character who I felt was likable. They all overreact. Every conversation seems to end in an argument and it became quite tedious. This book a women's fiction book and does discuss many important topics, but it is not a page-turner. If you are looking for something that is a little more fast-paced, then this book is not for you. The pacing is quite slow. So overall, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars. I appreciate the issues discussed. It just seems like so much put into one story. But there is also so much emotion. Readers will definitely need tissues for this book!Thank you JKS Communications for a copy of this book!

Land of Last Chances (She Writes Press) by Joan Cohen may be a novel, but it’s about real-life situations. Drawing from some of her own personal and professional experiences, Ms. Cohen crafts a complex and fast-paced story that forces us to examine our own values and beliefs.

While the reader journeys into the mind of forty-eight-year-old, single, marketing executive Jeanne Bridgeton and sees her world view unravel, our own philosophy and principles are challenged with each turn of the page.

What if we discovered family secrets that could directly impact our present as well as our future health and well-being? What if our work environment and career weren’t as secure as we thought? What if the people we counted on had secrets of their own? What if every aspect of our life exploded in a nanosecond?

What would we do…if…?

Further, this is a story of discovery. Both literally and figuratively. After discovering she’s pregnant, Jeanne unpacks a box her late mother had left behind. Symbolically, the carton becomes her own Pandora’s box, leading her to fear her life and that of her unborn child may be in danger.

With each unforeseen turn of events, Jeanne constructs a risk/benefit analysis, attempting to make the absolute right decisions. Though she’d like to, Jeanne cannot control everything. She learns that sometimes life throws us more than one curve ball at a time. When that happens the best decision could be a mac and cheese casserole.

Though Ms. Cohen sprinkles light-hearted moments and colorful secondary characters, she tackles the agony and impact Alzheimer’s has on its victims and their descendants with compassionate consideration. Land of Last Chances is always relevant, often poignant, and sometimes heartbreaking. Did I mention the golden retriever?

Because this story deals with real life issues, it’ll surely linger longer than most novels do, as we instinctively put ourselves in Jeanne Bridgeton’s place. I keep asking myself: What if she didn’t open the box?

Joan Cohen offers us an insightful look into one single woman's very intimate dilemma about bringing a child into the world while being seriously invested in a career that would definitely discourage such a move. It's not only career vs. baby, but it is a mystery from her past that she wrestles with - the possibility of genetic predisposition to early onset Alzheimers inherited from her father. What I enjoyed about the story was getting inside Jeanne's head as she struggled so to find answers. It felt very human, very real. We get to know Jeanne very well through this novel - she gets you on her side. We see both the loneliness of her life - despite her magnificent golden retriever companion - and the beginnings of a viable and comforting friendship with her Weight Watcher's friend Maggie, who becomes a surprisingly dynamic player in the story.
I read the book on a Kindle, and despite not liking this as a book substitute, I was very motivated to move toward the conclusion so I could discover whether Jeanne would find the answers that she needed (not going to reveal that here!). I guess this story reminded me of the numerous moments in my own life when I've been desperate for answers, convinced that actual "information" would lead the way when in fact it is usually the heart that tells the ultimate truth.
I thank Cohen for her book, and definitely recommend this smart and touching narrative.

I enjoyed reading this book. It’s well written and the author developed her characters. It wasn’t a page turner for me; I could set this nook aside and return to it weeks later. Told a good story.

A story with a very modern take obviously written by someone who is accustomed to the social mores of office life.
For that reason, I lost interest. I have lived that life, don’t need to read about it!
