Because of automation a lot more content. Content producers are not being compensated. Need micro payments. Need regulation. Blockchain. Distributed ledger. Cryptocurrency. Already possible. 🎬 Variety polled U.S. media and entertainment professionals on how roles in the industry would be affected by Gen AI. (Link in comments) The answer is more or less all of them. #Animators, #VFX artists, game developers, #voiceactors and concept/storyboard artists were the top roles reckoned to be affected. Bottom was #makeup artists. But my surprise was Directors - second from bottom. Sure, Directors have always been orchestrators rather than doers, so orchestrating AI elements isn’t a big change. But they also now have to manage the changes AI brings in every other department – not to mention navigate the now-choppy ethical and IP waters. Have these professionals missed the mark? BBC AMCerica I’ve gotten a LOT of questions on this website about this transaction. “AMC Networks has acquired full control of BBC America, its joint venture with BBC Studios.” https://lnkd.in/eh8nvSWy This is a pretty easy one to suss - and a crystal clear indication of two companies going in two VERY different directions… AMC is still controlled by OG Cable TV royalty, the Dolan family. Their CEO is Kristin Dolan. They are tripling down on what they know: Cable TV. Yes, it’s a dying business, but BBCA still spins off cash from affiliate fees and advertising, and, up until now AMCN only got 49.9% of the fruits of their labor. Additionally, this deal eliminates substantial long term contractual and financial obligations AMC has had to BBC Studios. Considering the immediate upside, and what they paid for the first half ($200 mil), $42 mil ain’t a bad price to pay. BBC Studios is the for-profit arm of BBC. They recently acquired BritBox International. As BBC Studios Media CEO Rebecca Glashow said, they are “expanding and diversifying our market presence in the U.S,” aka focusing on content arms-dealing and solidifying their streaming business. Thus, the influx of cash, as well as the divorce of exclusivity to BBCA, makes a ton of dollars and cents. Happy to answer more questions in the chat. But this one is not a complicated puzzle to piece together.

When I started showing demos of generating videos from text two years ago, I talked about a future where there will be no need for cameras, actors, props, etc. - you just write a script and it will come to life. And you won’t even need to write the script - LLMs can do that, based on your idea. Using Veo 2, the latest text-to-video engine from Google which is still in limited beta, Ethan Mollick brings this vision to life by asking Claude to generate videos prompts based on a poem, and the feeding those prompts directly into Veo 2.

From the Latest FilmLA Report • Scripted TV production in Los Angeles dropped 99% in Q3 2023 compared to 2022. • FilmLA calls for a significant expansion of California’s $330 million production incentive due to a 20% drop in local filming. • Other jurisdictions like New York, Ontario, Georgia, and the U.K. offer more competitive, uncapped or larger subsidies, putting California at a disadvantage. • Strikes in 2023 and a decline in Peak TV also contributed to a production slowdown. • Global production declines occurred, with Georgia and the U.K. also seeing reduced TV releases. • California temporarily boosted its incentives in 2021, but ongoing state budget deficits limit further expansions. • FilmLA warns California must act to support its entertainment industry or face continued market share losses. Iger says it’s their “biggest foray ever” into gaming and now Disney is going to allow developers "the opportunity to create their own wholly unique Disney-themed gaming experiences" (see pocketgamer article in comments) Why is this significant? Well, the House of Mouse is the undoubted master of IP building and crucially of CONTROLLING how they’re managed. And whilst in these days of UGC platforms it’s not unusual for IP to be ‘borrowed’ by creators, this marks an acknowledgment by Disney that by ceding *some* control (amount tbc) it puts their characters and worlds into the hands of many more users and creators than ever before. It sounds risky handing over your IP right? Especially when you can’t fully dictate how it will be used? (Again, the extent to which Disney will hand over the reigns with their IP is to be revealed) but this marks an acknowledgement of the user-centric era that you may have heard me and others talk about. Joe Condon explains it eloquently in his excellent newsletter - also linked in comments. Disney opening up use of their IP is powerful because it unlocks: 💰‘Hands Off’ Marketing & Revenue Generation - in a simplified way, the beauty of UGC is that once all the assets have been created and the IP integrated into the platform, the power can be with the creators to do a lot of the heavy lifting in marketing the IP and building the experiences that can eventually drive revenue for your brand. It’s a win-win. Low-lift, large reach, and quick feedback on what’s resonating, and what’s not. 💭Insight into Crossovers & The Big Screen Implications - Disney has such diverse IP that it attracts audiences from Gen A to Baby Boomers. With Fortnite about to play home to a concoction of these IP, it’ll provide invaluable (and real-time) feedback on which of their IPs are resonating the most with Fortnite’s audience, and what crossovers are most popular. You’d imagine this insight will be helping to advise decisions at Disney around which of their IPs are worth funding for future films and crossovers on the big screen so they get the most bang for their buck.
